Extraordinary filaments like metallic material for 3D printing are one of the big trends these days. The reason is that special filaments offer unique colors and textures which expand the possibilities of 3D printing. In this review, we show you to what extent the PLA filament has metallic properties and where the limit is.

SainSmart is a PLA filament with metallic particles suitable for 3D printing. Metallic material for 3D printers has a specific texture that results in a metallic like surface on objects without having to rework it afterwards.

This filament 100% pure PLA produced from natural pellets. Dyes have been specially selected for the metallic colors to preserve their metal like properties after the printing process. The metallic material is usable on all FDM printers with a 1.75mm nozzle.

Features of PLA and tips for users

PLA is a suitable material for beginners due to the better adhesion than ABS, because of which you don’t necessarily need a heated printing plate. Manufacturers, nevertheless, recommend the use of a heated printing bed at around 60 Degrees (please read their instructions as this is an approximate number). To achieve a perfect finish, we recommend using a fan in the printing process, but both techniques are not necessary.

Due to its vegetable origin, metallic material for 3D printing made of PLA is environmentally friendlier and gives a pleasantly sweet aroma when printing. PLA has a tendency to absorb moisture, therefore, we recommend keeping it in a dry and dark place – at least as long as it is not used on a regular bases.

Selection of metal filament colours

Of course, there is not just copper as a metallic look for your 3D printer. Other colors with different characteristics are:

Critical considerations and test

The material has a metallic-looking surface before and especially after the printing process. Nevertheless, it does not feel like metal, it continues to be plastic with a different look. Although the PLA filament has elements and traces of metal, these are suitable for 3D printing due to their small size.

Conclusion: Metallic material for 3D printing

Despite the small final criticism, we are very happy about this innovation of metallic material for 3D printing. It enables us to 3D print spare parts and objects in general in a more authentic manner. In addition, using PLA is easy and ventilation or a heated 3D printing platforms is not obligatory.
