The Basis: 3D Pens
Free and simple 3‑dimensional content design
3D pens are combinable with other techniques of art and enable the creation of new forms, which are either integrated or separate independent works.
Recommended 3D Printers
High expectations for devices due to the complexity of most creative ideas
Our Favourite: Inexpensive and Dual-Extruder
The Flashforge Dreamer scores an unbeatable price for a relatively high functionality. Although the printing volume is restrictive for a perfect art experience with a printing volume of 23x15x14cm. The technical equipment with two print heads ensures the possibility of printing complex structures with better quality results. This works by two different materials, one of which is water-soluble. As a result, bars support the blankets of cavities during printing without causing time-consuming post-processing operations. The water-soluble material is easy to remove and only the intended material remains.
The second print head can also be used for two different colors or material types, which limits the complexity of the structures without water-soluble support functions.
Large print volume for great ideas
The Makerbot Replicator Z18 is the ideal device for larger designs and works with a print volume of 30 x 30.5 x 45.7 cm. This makes the 3D printer ideal for the design of e.g. furniture. Although the complete object can not always be printed in such printers, the amount of small parts required compared to the Dreamer on the left is smaller. For example, the legs, seat and back of a chair can be printed and assembled separately.
The 3D printer does not contain two print heads, which does not enable multiple materials or water-soluble support materials. In addition, Makerbot requires a strong price in the almost 5‑digit range, which makes the device more suitable for artists and academies with an existing experience or a large budget. Compared to other industrial devices the Makerbot Z18 is very cheap, but to 3D printers from the consumer area it is very expensive. The latter are generally sufficient for the entry of art schools into the technology.
