Anyone who buys a 3D printer knows the start time in which one prints all sort of necessary and unnecessary objects. After a while this amount decreases and you print more pragmatically and focus on utility (the thing 3D printers are actually made for).
In this blog post we walk you through a practical 3D printing application for which we see economic benefits in the near future through 3D printing in private use.
Example of a practical 3D printing application
This example is for everyone using contact lenses, those of you who cook (often) and so on. One of our 3D gurus was home Friday night and had a flight abroad the next day. While packing, he noticed that he had only one bottle with more than one liter of cleaning liquid for his contact lenses. To save weight, it was only logical to fill a small amount in a smaller tube.
He immediately found a suitable bottle to pour the liquid in, but quickly realized that the top opening was too small which would lead the fluid past the sides. Therefore, head had the idea to use a funnel, but couldn’t find a no suitable one at home.
Go downtown and buy one – no, it was too late and most shops closed.
Buy comfortably via Amazon Prime – no, there was not enough time for that.
Then he realized this simple and ingenious idea of simply printing it out.
Here we have an example of a practical application and economic benefits through 3D printing in private use. It not only saved him money, but most importantly solved the problem of urgency. No Amazon Prime or express delivery could compete with the heroic feeling of holding the self-printed object in his hands after 30 minutes.
Challenge of practical 3D printing applications
Of course, in this example we out the high acquisition costs and learning expenses for 3D printing. In addition, the quality of our funnel cannot meet the usual quality standards of e.g. metallic funnels.
In return, we have only focused on two positive aspects. The cost advantage of 3D printing in and that the funnel was printed after only 30 minutes. Further benefits such as the option for customization of the size, colors, shapes and a signature have been left out.
The greatest need for our society and businesses to benefit from these advantages is the necessity for sufficient awareness. The reason is that at the moment someone needs an object, the participants must directly come to the idea of 3D printing it at home. Even we had to think for a moment and did not recognize the application at first. In retrospect, it was self-evident for us and the entire range of benefits is clearly visible. But in such a situation, the brain works very efficiently taking the old path without losing time for extensive and creative consideration.
We hope this positive experience of our practical 3D printing application helped you find new opportunities in your daily life. Economic benefits of 3D printing in private use were clearly visible. However, this does not replace the need for shops and online services, but serves as an additional tool in the mid-term (taking over most of it in the long-term). However, as technology advances, the balance (percentage) will change as it did with online shopping.
It was also important for us to highlight the importance of awareness for applications in society and business. Only the widest possible use cases of 3D printers create the desired added value which the technology promises.
