The FlashForge Finder is an ideal entry-level model. Although the 3D printer has some minor disadvantages with the filament, the device points with user-friendliness and the beautiful design.

Our My3D.Guru team decided to opt for this visually stunning device in our office. On one hand, we wanted to test the 3D Printer, because the Flashforge Finder was relatively new on the market in 2016. On the other hand, we wanted to familiarize the entire team even our programmers with the technology and we achieved it.

After a long time reviewing what suits us best, we decided to order the Flashforge Finder. We ordered the product directly via Flashforge on Amazon and received the product properly delivered. To date, we are satisfied with the purchase of this device.

Starting the Flashforge Finder

Even for inexperienced members the commissioning was amazingly simple. Still, some time to set the unit without pressure drops or other errors. The Flashforge customer service helped us very quickly because we had problems with the filament check. After we change a setting under Tools (Tools) -> in Settings (Settings) on the touchscreen, the Flashforge Finder ran without a single failure. The leveling of the printing platform works very easily with the integrated instructions through the touchpad.

3D Printing experience

Since the initial difficulties, there has been no more break-offs during the print process. The device is very reliable and the quality of ours results can keep up with higher priced 3D Printers. Nevertheless, there are problems as it comes to warping when we choose large and wide objects. The Flashforge Finder prints with PLA and does not have a heated print bed. As a result, the printed object wraps on the sides and slowly dissolves from the platform. That is why we generally print upwards or add support materials to the critical points that look like mice ears. The ears increase the the surface adhesion and prevents warping.

Support tools

In addition, blue tape helps with the adhesion and we definitely recommend it for the Flashforge Finder. Many also use the tape for other devices such as the Makerbot Replicator. Also useful is a conventional spatula which you can probably find in your tool box.

FlashForge’s slicer program, Flashprint, does not leave many wishes unfulfilled. Of course there are no advanced features available in professional and costly software solutions with which the Finder by the way is also compatible. The installation is simple, the most important controls and setting options are included plus the connection between a computer and 3D Printer via Wlan works extremely good.

Advantages disadvantages

• Beautiful design with red and black
• Simple user interface with a touch screen
• Commissioning of the device and leveling of the printer plate are relatively easy

• The filament holder does not allow larger or thicker coils from other producers
• Only filament usable is PLA no ABS as there is not heated build plate

Filament / material

The biggest disadvantage of the FlashForge Finder is the built in cartridge for the material. Since the manufacturer wants to sell his own material, the size is very untypical in the industry with 0.6 kg.  For this purpose, we printed our own Filament holder with the delivered material to hand. Included in the delivery was a spool in blue, which was enough for some test prints and the material holder.

Optimal application

The device in itself is a great device at home or in schools for newcomers into the technology. For other educational institutions such as colleges or art academies the device is rather unsuitable abd especially not for companies.

Flashforge as a company

Flashforge customer service is extremely fast and remarkable keeping in mind that the company is from China. The online community around Flashforge is relatively large and the brand now exists for several years targeting the private customer segment.
